WA kids say 150,000 is a great number!
Today Member for Parliament Melissa Parke joined hundreds of kids from
Fremantle to celebrate a huge milestone for the Australian Sports Commissions
Active After-school Communities (AASC) program 150,000 children around
Australia are now playing sport, games and activities after school in a safe, fun
and structured environment.
Ms Parke said she was happy to be able to help celebrate the event and
congratulated all involved in this Australian Government Initiative.
Primary schools and Out of School Hours Care centres in the Fremantle region
are part of a highly successful national program and theyre doing their bit to live
a healthier life, Ms Parke said.
The unique program now boasts 150,000 children nationally having fun,
improving their motor skills, making new friends, saying no to sedentary activities
after school and developing a lifelong love of being physically active.
North Fremantle Primary School is one primary school enjoying the benefits of
the AASC program. Principal, Matt OMara says, the Active After-school
Communities program has added terrific value to our students education after
school. One third of the schools students are involved in the program and enjoy
the variety of sports they undertake after school. Our students have covered
multi-skill, soccer and circus skills in their time involved in the program. Of
particular interest are the students new to sport who find the program offers
them a way of being thoroughly immersed in a sporting activity.
Over 15,000 children participate in the AASC program in Western Australia and
locally based regional coordinators have trained over 2,400 local people to
become community coaches in the program.
