VIC STARS TO PLAY IN PREMIER CRICKET’S COUNTRY ROUND

Victorian Bushrangers leg-spinner Bryce McGain headlines a list of star players set to take part

in Premier Cricket’s annual country round of matches.

The bulk of McGain’s state team mates will take part in games throughout regional Victoria,

with David Hussey (pending Australian selection) joining him at Warrion, near Colac, where

Prahran takes on a Melbourne side featuring Brad Hodge, Andrew McDonald and Shane

Harwood. It will be one of McGain’s first hit-outs since having shoulder surgery.

“The prognosis was 16 to 20 weeks on the sidelines so it was a great Christmas present to get

the news from (surgeon) Greg Hoy that I was OK to start bowling,” he said.

“I can’t wait to get out and play, and the country round’s a great one to take part in. We get

fantastic support from the local clubs and communities and the players really enjoy it.”

Premier Cricket’s ‘Country Round’ has become an annual highlight for Premier Clubs, players,

umpires and also for the VCCL host Associations. Cricket Victoria (CV) hopes that delivering a

high standard of cricket to regional areas will maintain and enhance its excellent relationship

with those involved.  Part of Cricket Victoria’s commitment to country cricket is also to allocate

a Bushrangers’ match each season to a regional centre – last Sunday the KFC Big Bash clash

against the Queensland Bulls was played in front of more than 12,000 fans at Skilled Stadium

in Geelong.

Season 2008/09 is the eleventh in which CV’s Premier Clubs will complete a round of matches

in country Victoria. Hosting a match for the first time this season is Hamilton, bringing to 49 the

number of venues around Victoria which have been used since the first match at Bendigo in

January 1994. Country Victoria has played a huge part in cricket in this State. Current

Bushrangers skipper Cameron White (Bairnsdale), recent Test debutant Peter Siddle

(Morwell), and Victorian team mates Aiden Blizzard (Shepparton), Aaron Finch (Colac), Shane

Harwood (Ballarat), Andrew McDonald (Albury) and Bryce McGain (Mornington) are among

many other great players to have been recruited from regional areas.

Some of the host associations have rescheduled their local cricket to the Sunday, while

the Panthers v Lions clash at Kyabram will be a day-night match, starting at 2.30pm. As a

further step towards supporting cricket regionally, Cricket Victoria has also appointed

appropriately qualified and accredited local umpires to officiate in six matches along with a

senior CV panel member. The senior country umpires appointed are Michael Bayly (Ballarat),

Michael Hurley (Wangaratta), Clive Salmon (Leongatha), Colin Smith (Cobram), Peter

Stonehouse (Warrion) and Allan Flavell (Hamilton).
