RINGWOOD, GEELONG CHASE HISTORY IN VB PREMIER CRICKET FINAL

For the first time in Premier/District Cricket history, RINGWOOD and GEELONG meet in a

Final starting tomorrow (Friday) at the Junction Oval. For two relative newcomers to Premier

Cricket, this is the most significant match in both clubs’ history.

Ringwood was admitted to VCA ranks in 1974/75, together with Waverley (now Dandenong),

while Geelong came into the competition in 1993/94 along with Frankston Peninsula. It is just

the third time that each club has made the finals.

Only two players on the field this weekend – the Cats’ Damian Shanahan and Liam Buchanan

–have experienced the pressure of a Premier Final. Neither player has fond memories –

Shanahan played in Camberwell Magpies’ loss to Melbourne at the Albert Ground in 1997/98

and Buchanan in Melbourne’s loss to St Kilda at the Junction Oval in 2004/05.

Both clubs have had outstanding individual performers throughout the season. For Ringwood,

Michael King has set a new club record with his 55 wickets @ 13.09. For Geelong, both Aaron

Finch (1081 runs @ 56.89) and Trent Walerys (57 wickets @ 16.61) have established new club

records for batting and bowling, respectively.

The quest for an inaugural flag follows Dandenong’s successful accomplishment of this feat

last season. The Panthers missed the chance to defend their title when Geelong beat them in

last weekend’s semi final.
