REMARKABLE WISDEN COLLECTION FROM A CRICKETING GREAT
Most cricket aficionados will remember Hugh Trumble as the Australian Test captain who epitomised the
Golden Age of cricket
by becoming one of only three bowlers to twice take a hat-trick in Test cricket.
Collectors of cricketing memorabilia will remember him for a vastly different reason. His collection of the
Wisden Cricketers Almanack is extraordinary and now, more than 70 years after his death, the collection is
being offered for sale by his family.
Wisden is the bible of cricket; a treasure trove of facts and figures unprecedented in any sporting code. First
published in 1864, many early editions
in particular hardcover copies
are rare and in high demand.
Trumble was an enthusiastic collector of Wisdens until his death in 1938.
It is very unusual for
a Wisden collection of such breadth and quality reach the market, and one from the
library of a Test cricketer is even more unusual. Many of the lots on offer are extremely rare and are being
sold individually.
Enquiries from private collectors and institutions here and overseas started within hours of the details
appearing on our website, says Charles Leski. Theyre particularly strong from people wanting to
complete their collection of Wisdens which was, to this point, almost impossible to achieve.
The 59 lots will be offered for sale by Leski Auctions in Melbourne on Tuesday, February 16th at 5.00pm.
Pre-sale estimates vary from
$100
-
$2,500.
