Olympian baptizes Minister in canoe rapids

Australia’s first male Olympic Canoe Slalom medallist Robin Bell will lead Sports

Minister Kate Ellis in her whitewater initiation to encourage a new wave of young

athletes to the sport.

Canoe Kayak Slalom stars Jacqui Lawrence, Kate Lawrence and Warwick Draper are

also joining Member for Lindsay David Bradbury at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium

event tomorrow (Wednesday, 4 March).

Competition to select Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holders and the Australian

team to contest 2009 World Cup and World Championships in Europe will continue at

the Penrith venue this weekend (7 and 8 March).

Minister Ellis wants her adventure on the rapids to inspire young athletes to try canoeing

and consider a possible journey towards representing Australia beyond London 2012.
