New age start blocks unveiled in swim first
The first swimming starting blocks of the future installed in Australia will be
unveiled at the AIS tomorrow (Thursday, 30 April).
Approved by FINA, the starting blocks will make their Australian competition
debut during Swimming Australias Duel in the Pool against Japan at the AIS
on May 9 and 10.
The new-look Omega blocks feature an adjustable slanted footrest, allowing
swimmers to use a crouch start with the rear position leg at a 90 degree angle
at the knee.
They also boast a false start detection system and acoustic start devices to
ensure each competitor hears the start signal at the exact same moment.
