NAVY GEORGE BASS SURFBOAT MARATHON UPDATE 

DAY ONE – BATEMAN’S BAY TO MORUYA – 31 KMS



The first day of the Navy sponsored 2010 George Bass Surfboat Marathon saw a strong

southerly and swells of up to three metres testing rowers in the opening leg.

 

The conditions took their toll, with a rower from Narooma rushed to shore suffering

hypothermia and two Pambula rowers treated for seasickness. 

 

The support boat for international crew Surf Boat Holland broke down shortly after the

start which limited their ability to utilise reserve rowers. 

 

In the Open Men division, Bulli and the Canberra Vikings fought oar for oar for first place,

until Canberra pulled away towards the finish.

 

In the Open Women division, Canberra Vikings and defending champions Woolamai

enjoyed fierce competition with the Canberra crew surging ahead close to the finish. 


Results of the first days racing:


Men’s Open division


First place - Canberra Vikings 2hours, 42 minutes, 40 seconds


Second place - Bulli 2 hours, 46 minutes


Third place - Broulee 2 hours, 47 minutes, 10 seconds


Overall division leader - Canberra Vikings


Woman’s Open division


Moruya Vikings 3 hours, 5 minutes, 32 seconds


Woolamai 3 hours, 10 minutes, three seconds


Broulee Canberra, 3 hours, 16 minutes, 11 seconds


Overall division leader - Moruya Vikings


Men’s Veteran division


First place - North Steyne 2 hours 48 minutes 20 seconds


Second place - Bulli 2 hours 59 minutes, 15 seconds


Third place - Tathra 3 hours, 1 minute, 27 seconds


Overall division leader - North Steyne

The second day of racing starts at Moruya at 9am and finishes in Tuross, a distance of

19kms.

The Navy George Bass Surfboat Marathon is the longest, toughest open sea Surfboat

Race in the world.  The gruelling marathon involves teams rowing their surfboats along

190km of the south coast of NSW from Bateman’s Bay to Eden.
