NAVY GEORGE BASS SURFBOAT MARATHON UPDATE 

DAY FIVE – BERMAGUI TO TATHRA – 36 KMS



After a gruelling week with strong southerly winds rowers have now completed day five,

the longest and toughest stage.  Winds weren’t as strong as forecast but today’s leg still

proved a challenge, with one rower from Moruya suffering hypothermia.


While the Vikings completed the race in a fast time, it took some crews well over four

hours to complete the leg.  


“Just to finish today is what the George Bass is all about,” said sweep for the Vikings

crew, Gavin Hunt.


The Canberra Vikings continued their dominant form taking out both the male and female

divisions. 


In the veterans class Sydney Northern Beaches club North Steyne also remain

undefeated in the marathon.


Tomorrow, Woolamai women’s crew are hoping to dethrone the Canberra Vikings/ Met

Caloundra crew.  “Conditions tomorrow will be good for us,” sweep Stephen Blewett said.

The sixth day of racing starts at Tathra at 9am and finishes in Pambula, a distance of

27kms.


The Navy George Bass Surfboat Marathon is the longest, toughest open sea Surfboat

Race in the world.  The gruelling marathon involves teams rowing their surfboats along

190km of the south coast of NSW from Bateman’s Bay to Eden.
