NAVY GEORGE BASS SURFBOAT MARATHON UPDATE 

DAY TWO – MORUYA TO TUROSS – 19 KMS



The second day of the Navy sponsored 2010 George Bass Surfboat Marathon continued

to test competitors with two metre surf off Moruya beach and at Coila Beach, Tuross

Head.


Once at sea, rowers enjoyed calmer conditions than for the opening leg yesterday. Seas

were running on a southerly swell of about 2 metres, with a slight southwesterly breeze

blowing.


In the Open Men division, the Canberra Vikings continued their winning form taking out

first place again. Bulli ran in second with Wollongong just seconds behind in third place.

 

In the Open Women division, Canberra Vikings and defending champions Woolamai

enjoyed fierce competition with the Canberra crew surging ahead close to the finish. 


Woolamai capsized early off Moruya beach, with three seats needing replacing before

they could continue racing again.

Men’s Open division


Canberra Vikings, 1 hour, 17 minutes, 2 seconds


Bulli, 1 hour, 19 minutes, 13 seconds


Wollongong, 1 hour, 19 minutes, 36 seconds

Canberra Vikings/ Caloundra, 1 hour, 23 minutes, 39 seconds


Woolamai, 1 hour, 24 minutes, 40 seconds


Moruya 1 hour, 26 minutes, 52 seconds

Men’s Veteran division


First place - North Steyne 1 hour 17 minutes, 14 seconds


Narooma 1 hour, 17 minutes, 20 seconds


Pambula 1 hour, 22 minutes, 31 seconds


Overall division leader - North Steyne

The third day of racing starts at Tuross at 9am and finishes in Narooma, a distance of

22kms.

The Navy George Bass Surfboat Marathon is the longest, toughest open sea Surfboat

Race in the world.  The gruelling marathon involves teams rowing their surfboats along

190km of the south coast of NSW from Bateman’s Bay to Eden.
