AUSTRALIAS NEWEST CITIZENS CELEBRATE
AT THE AFL
Five people from three countries will become Australian citizens during
half-time at the Sydney Swans v Melbourne Demons match at Manuka
Oval, Canberra.
The event will be presided over by Federal Member for Grayndler and
Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local
Government, Anthony Albanese, assisted by Australian Football League
commissioner Chris Lynch.
The new Australians represent different corners of the globe, coming from
Bangladesh, Canada and Tonga.
This year is a special time to become a citizen, as 2009 marks the 60th
anniversary of Australian citizenship. During the past six decades, more
than four million people from more than 200 countries have become
Australian citizens.
The Australian citizenship ceremony at Manuka Oval is a combined
initiative of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and the AFL.
