Local Boys Shine in Optus Junior Tour Tournaments
It was a case of local boys made good in the latest Optus Junior Tour Tournaments held across
Victoria during the first week of April.
In the 2008 Frankston Junior Masters, local teenager Ashleigh Janke from Frankston won the
Boys 18 Singles title, easily accounting for opponent Jordan Milburn 6-1 6-1 in the final.
Ashleighs win comes on the back of his earlier triumph at the 2008 Frankston Summer Classic.
The 16 year-old is currently ranked number 286 in the Australian National Rankings, but his star
is set to rise even further, having already won three of his last five Optus Junior Tournaments in
the 16s age group over the past four months.
The 2008 Big 4 Geelong Junior Grasscourt Championships had all of Greater Geelong buzzing
after 17 year-old local boy Jackson Smith defeated compatriot Matthew Holschier 6-2 3-6 6-1 in
an all-Geelong region Boys 18s singles final. The good news for the city didnt stop there
however, as the two defeated semi-finalists also hail from the same area.
Jackson is currently ranked number 187 after defeating Holschier, who can also count his
progress a success, having earlier accounted for the tournaments top seed Daniel Simko in one
of the semi-finals.
Both events were interrupted on Wednesday by hurricane-like conditions, with winds in excess of
100km/h making conditions extremely difficult for players and officials alike.
All-in-all, the two tournaments marked another successful chapter on the Optus Junior Tour, with
the tournaments yet again proving a fertile breeding ground for local talent.
