JUMPER RECALLS THE BEST YEARS OF CAPTAIN BLOOD
The last letter Jack Dyer wrote before he passed away in August, 2003 was to confirm the authenticity of the
number 17 jumper that is being offered for sale by Leski Auctions.
Captain Blood as he was affectionately known, (at least by those who loved him), epitomized the spirit of
Australian Rules Football. Tough and uncompromising on the field, he was courteous and sociable away
from it. Not only was he the greatest player of his day, he also came to symbolize the working class era of
Richmond during the Great Depression and World War II.
The No. 17 jumper was uniquely Dyers, and this particular jumper was worn during his years as Captain-
Coach, arguably the greatest years of his playing career.
Despite being a man known more for his actions than his words, he ironically became one of the first media
stars with his nemesis, ex-Collingwood captain Lou The Lip Richards. They were trailblazers who set the
scene for people like Eddie McGuire and Sam Newman. Some say their star is yet to be eclipsed.
Jack Dyers Richmond No. 17 jumper will be offered for sale by Leski Auctions in Melbourne on Monday,
August 18th at 5.30pm.
We come across many unique and important items of memorabilia, says Charles Leski. But few stir the
emotions like Jack Dyers No. 17 jumper.
Lot 1364 has a pre-sale estimate of $5,000 - $10,000 and includes Dyers letter of authenticity.
