GREG CHAPPELL BAGGY GREEN UP FOR GRABS
Greg Chappell was one of the few Australian cricketers to dance at two weddings and survive the bruising
encounter. He was a controversial player and captain, but an inspirational one as well. Having reached the
peak of
Australian Test cricket, he abruptly left the fold and joined the breakaway World Series Cricket in
1977. Despite the very public snub to the cricketing Establishment, he regained the captaincy in 1979 and
retained it until his retirement in 1983.
The Chappell name is synonymous with cricket, in the same way that Bradman was a generation earlier. His
baggy green test cap from 1977 is a rare offering, having previously been sold by Christies Australia in 2001.
Also for auction is a unique collection of Greg Chappell Player of the Match and other awards from 1975
83. The collection of 18 awards includes the 1975-76 Player of the Match for the 1st Test against the West
Indies in Brisbane, and the 1979-80 Player of the Match for the Australia v England Test in December 1979.
The Chappell brothers are part of Australian cricketing royalty, and it was largely due to Greg Chappells
controversial decision to join WSC that we have one-day and Twenty20 cricket today, says Charles Leski.
He brought a new level of professionalism to the game by risking his reputation in the face of tough odds.
