FOUR NEW BAGGY GREENS
Buying a baggy green could be worth gold to a savvy investor. Prices realised at auction have increased
significantly over recent years with the trend set to continue with four new caps being offered for sale by
Leski Auctions on Monday, March 30th at 5.00pm.
The first was worn by Wally Grout, undoubtedly one of the greatest wicketkeeper Australia has produced.
During his tenure behind the stumps from 1957-65, Australia never lost a series in which Grout played. His
baggy green has a pre-sale estimate of $12,000 to $15,000.
The second was worn by the controversial Australian captain Kim Hughes. While Hughes is best
remembered for his captaincy of the rebel tour to South Africa in 1985-86 and 1986-87, his remarkable
innings of 100 against the West Indies in 1981 earned him a place in Wisdens Top 10 Innings of all time.
His baggy green has a pre-sale estimate of $12,000 to $15,000.
The third was worn by Gil Langley, who made his Test debut at the Gabba during the 1951-52 series against
the West Indies when he took three catches and four stumpings. His skills behind the wicket were recognised
by Wisden Cricketers' Almanack
who proclaimed him "the safest wicketkeeper in the game." His baggy
green has a pre-sale estimate of $12,000 to $15,000.
The fourth was owned by Tim Zoehrer who played ten Test matches between 1986 and 87. This mini
baggy green was presented at a reunion of Australias Test players in July, 2003. It has a pre-sale estimate of
$3,500 to $4,500.
These baggy greens are unique offerings with enormous investment potential, says Charles Leski
