Fitzy to inspire tomorrow’s champions

Davis Cup Captain and tennis ace, John Fitzgerald will impart his expertise on young tennis

enthusiasts (13/U boys) this weekend.

The John Fitzgerald Cup, a highly anticipated annual teams event for 13/U boys staged by

Tennis Victoria, will be served up at Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre (Dowling St, Wendoree) on

Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 November. Players from all over regional Victoria will make their way to

Ballarat to represent one of 12 teams.

Sunday afternoon will see John Fitzgerald take each team through their paces in a trial hit-out

and under his tutelage, the boys will practice their on-court game and fine tune their skill

acquisition.

“I’m pleased that this regional boys’ teams tournament in Ballarat provides another great

opportunity for players to press their claims for national and international representation“ said

John Fitzgerald.

As hosts, Central Highlands will be looking to secure the Cup after losing it to Barwon in a nail-

biting final last year.

Of the 48 participants in the John Fitzgerald Cup, four players will be selected to represent

Victoria at the national Foundation Cup Final to be held in Melbourne during the first week of the

Australian Open. Victoria will enter this event as defending champions, after winning the Cup in

January in Adelaide.

Jacob Grills (Ocean Grove), who was both a member of the winning Barwon team (2007) and the

winning Victorian team (2008), is returning this year to lead Barwon’s charge. Jacob is a rising

talent in the sport of tennis, having this year won two 12/U Optus Junior Tour events (Geelong

and Albury) as well as being a finalist in two others (Colac and Launceston).

Play is expected to get underway at 9am on both days in a round robin format, with the Final (and

playoffs) scheduled for 2pm on Sunday.

A full player list is attached and for more information on the tournament, including results as they
