An Evening of Firsts at TCAV Awards Night
It was an evening of firsts for the Tennis Coaches Australia - Victoria (TCAV) Awards Night,
held on Friday 4 April 2008, at the prestigious Grace Park Tennis Club.
The TCAV Awards Night is an annual event that seeks to acknowledge the achievements of
Victorias top coaches, and for the first time in its illustrious history, the top prize for Club
Coach of the Year was awarded to joint winners, with Greg Gunn from Fountain Gate Tennis
Club and Nick Board from Sale Tennis Club sharing this years honours.
In addition, this year also saw our very first person elevated to Legend status, with renowned
coach Ian Occleshaw nominated on the night. Ian was a founding member of the TCAV, and
was on the Board during the organisations humble beginnings. A coach becomes eligible for
Legend status after 50 years service; a great achievement by Ian.
The Coach of the Year award recognises the contributions of coaches in the areas of
development and program delivery, and this year it was presented to another Ian; this time Ian
Barclay, in recognition of his work over many years with Victorias elite juniors.
Ian has been widely regarded for his past work with Pat Cash during the Cashs historic
triumph at Wimbledon 87, and with the Australian Davis Cup team.
There were also two more nominations into the TCAV Hall of Fame, with Cheryl Hewitt and
Will Coghlan being inducted on the night.
