AIS basketball graduate returns to womens coaching staff
Former basketball scholarship holder Kristy Flores has returned to the Australian
Institute of Sport as assistant coach for the new Womens National Basketball
League season.
Flores (nee Baker), who suited up for the AIS in 1994-95, is back in Australia after
more than a decade playing and coaching in the United States.
Womens head coach Phil Brown said Flores was an outstanding acquisition for the
AIS program.
Kristy made a name for herself playing for the AIS and Bulleen Boomers in the mid-
90s before having five seasons with the California Polytechnic State University,
Brown said.
Since 2002, she has forged an impressive coaching career, firstly as assistant
womens coach at California Polytechnic and the last four years at Utah State
University, most recently as associate head womens coach.
Her credentials are enhanced by a psychology degree specialising in coaching and
organisational behaviour which will be a great asset to the program.
The skills, knowledge and experience Kristy brings to the table will be a major boon
in developing the next crop of elite womens basketballers.
Current assistant coach Nicole Ireland will continue with the AIS until 31 December.
Nicole has been a valuable part the AIS program over the last three years, Brown
said.
I thank Nicole for her terrific contribution and I am sure she will continue making a
positive impact on basketball in the future.
The big plus for the AIS is having two high calibre assistant coaches on board
providing support for the early part of the new season.
