‘BAGGY GREEN’ AND BLAZER A RARE COMBINATION

Edward ‘Ted’ a’Beckett

played four Tests for Australia

during the period 1928

1931.  It was an

unremarkable career with fairly ordinary batting and bowling averages.  His legacy however is a rare double:

a ‘baggy green’ Test cap and Test blazer from the 1930 Ashes Tour.

The ‘baggy green’ is in very good match-used condition and includes a wire embroidered Coat-of-Arms and

‘1930’ on the front, and a label endorsed with ‘E.L. a’Beckett’.  The blazer features the Australian Coat-of-

Arms and ‘1930’ on the pocket in gold and silver wire and coloured silk.  This is also in very good condition.

a’Beckett’s ‘baggy green’ is one of five being offered for sale in the same auction.  The others were presented

to Jack Potter (1964), Eric Freeman (1967), Ashley Mallett (1968) and Ian Callen (1982/83).

“The ‘baggy green’ and blazer are the ultimate expression of elite cricket for any Australian player,” says

Charles Leski.  “Ted a’Beckett’s set is extremely rare, and I don’t think we ever come across another for that

Tour.”

Lot

682 (baggy green) and 683 (blazer)

will be offered for sale by Leski Auctions in Melbourne on

Wednesday, December 16th at 5.00pm.   The baggy green has a pre-sale estimate of $12,000 - $15,000.  The

blazer has a pre-sale estimate of $4,000 -

$6,000.
